The new library is designed as an ensemble of three buildings in a strong relation to its context. A delicate structure is responding to the specific fabric of Sint-Martens-Latem. The new library is subtly twisted corresponding to the street, perpendicular to the existing school building. Because of that, the building gains a very clear public character in the neighbourhood. The old library building is located as an "objet trouvé" within the ensemble and houses, among other things, the archive center. A multipurpose space is located farther on the plot and is not visible from the street.
The low volume seeks connection with both the library and the school, it mediates between both users. An inner garden is created between these three volumes as an intimate concentration place, a sheltered reading garden. At the ground floor, a transparent building layer strengthens the permeability and visual relationship between the volumes.
